Hi all!

I'm doing some minor operational work tonight. It should be transparent, but there's always a chance that something goes wrong. The main thing I'm touching is testing a replacement for Apache2 (our web server software) in one area of the site.

Thank you!

Fiberuary Challenge Day 3: Mood

Uh. Well, my mood's not great these days, guys! Not sure how it could be! I go back and forth on the idea of mood tracking. Crochet designer Toni Lipsey ran a make-along for a "mood blanket" in place of her usual temperature blanket last year, and that actually kick-started my thinking about this. On the one hand, it could be helpful to show there are still good days despite lo, these times. On the other hand, lo, these times. I'd better love the color I choose for anger and pre-purchase a good 500g of it.

That's not necessarily a bad thing! The intention behind temperature blankets is to document climate change, after all. So they're complex objects, recording a crisis alongside (hopefully) good memories from the year and the enjoyment of one's stitching. Likewise, a mood blanket can tell multiple stories.

Now, the real problem is they take a fuckton of yarn and I get sooooo bored. The one temperature blanket I made had nine different mosaic crochet stitch combos, and that still wasn't enough variety for me. An angrysad mood blanket would need 365 stitches to make up for the color monotony.

Fiberuary Challenge Day 2: New Beginnings

All of my current WIPs were started last year, so I don't have brand new cast-ons to share at the moment. But there are two small projects I started and finished in January that are putting me on new paths.

The first was spinning banana fiber. My spinning guild distributed 7g of fiber each to interested spinners at our January meeting. The guild leader thought the "banana" label was probably another rayon putting on airs, but I have a bit of 100% bamboo rayon in my stash and found the two didn't burn alike at all (beyond the basic "Yes, these are both cellulose fibers" traits). I think this is the real thing! It's made from a banana plant grown in the Philippines and far predates Spanish colonization. This was my first non-animal fiber spin, which sets me up for one of my major plans this year: Spinning and knitting 100% linen.

My other small finished project is another first step toward a larger goal. I took a sashiko intro class at the library a couple weeks ago. We used denim scraps—a jeans pocket in my case—and wash-away interfacing printed patterns, which made it a difficult intro to the technique. I could only get through a small portion per day before my hands were worn out. My finished piece looks... okay. The concepts are there, just need to smooth out the motions with practice on easier fabric. Some jerk put a hold on my library book of stitch patterns, so I spent a couple hours today tracing enough for a good sampler. Sashiko isn't the only form of embroidery I plan to try this year, but I suspect it's going to be the one I use most.

Are you trying anything new this year? Any tiny steps building toward a huge project?

Three years? Whoops. Kinda wish I had more worth writing about in that big of a gap. Still trying to escape Indiana, but I'm mostly getting job applications rejected before lunch the next day. Haven't been transformatively fannish about much either. I gave up midway through Critical Role campaign 3, but I'm finding the new campaign's multi-table approach interesting so far. Hopefully it's inspiring enough that I might get back to my Mighty Nein socks project. I'm wearing my Beau socks right now.

Spouse and I started playing Sky: Children of the Light right after it launched on Steam, so we're coming up on our 2nd moth-iversaries in the spring. If you play too, feel free to hit me up for a friend code! I play most days and always send light to everyone. Spouse has done a bunch of needlefelting and clay sculpting projects of our characters and in-game creatures, and I have needlefelted one (1) crab. What I really want to make is the crochet cape a TGC employee developed from several existing patterns. You know, right after I knit that Journey scarf I've been meaning to get around to.

I've always wanted to participate in Fiberuary, a yarn-y Instagram event created by Cecilia Nelson-Hurt, but I'm just not an Instagram person. Or any kind of image- and snippet-based social media person. So I'm going to give it a shot here and get myself back in the habit of posting!

28 fiber-related prompts for the month of February
(I see there are two Wear It Wednesdays. Undecided if I'll do both or pick a past year's prompt for one.)

Day 1: Hello, it's me

When I last posted here, I was already crocheting, knitting, and dyeing yarn. I learned to crochet in my early 20s, knit late 20s, and dye mid-30s. Since then I've started spinning my own yarn, and one of my goals this year is to learn embroidery for visible mending and embellishment. I've also known how to sew clothing since childhood, but it's always been more of a chore than a hobby.

I'm doing my very best to resist weaving! They're not gonna get me, dammit! It helps that I'm far more interested in blankets than shoelaces, so it's easy not to be tempted by inkle looms and tablet sets. Even if I could afford a floor loom, there's nowhere for it to live in my house. This does not stop me from keeping Handwoven and Little Looms in my Libby magazine subscriptions.

Welcome to Fandom 5K! 2026 will be our tenth and final year.

This is a multi-fandom gift exchange for fic with a 5,000-word minimum and comics with a 5-page minimum. Last year's challenge can be found here on AO3 - 2026 link TBA.

Before signing up, please read the rules! You can also see the 2025 FAQ for some common questions. 2026 versions of these pages will be linked soon, but most of the rules will be consistent with the exception of the default amnesty (see below).

Other questions to the mods can be posted to the community or emailed to fandom5kmod@gmail.com. Please contact us privately for any concerns about your assignment or your gift.

Quick links for 2026 TBA:
  • Challenge profile
  • Rules
  • FAQ
  • Tag set
  • Requests on the app
  • Mod email: fandom5kmod@gmail.com

Planned 2026 schedule (may be tweaked slightly, especially if other longform exchanges announce conflicting schedules; will be finalized by nominations):
  • Nominations: 22 March - 1 April
  • Signups: 3 April - 11 April
  • Assignments out by: 14 April
  • Mandatory check-in: 8-15 May
  • Default deadline: 15 May
  • Works due: 5 June
  • Works revealed: 26 June
  • Creators revealed: 11 July
All deadlines are at 10:59 PM EDT on the date listed, unless otherwise indicated. (This is an hour earlier than last year. Your mod is getting older and fonder of sleep.)

As a reminder, for the final round, I am issuing an amnesty to anyone who defaulted late in 2025 or previous years, as long as that default occurred before the works due deadline.

That is, if you forgot to contact me during check-in week, or you checked in but then hit the default button before the deadline because something came up, you no longer need to create a make-up assignment to participate in the final round.

If you didn't default before the works due deadline--maybe you simply didn't show up on that date and never turned a work in, or you defaulted with an extension--I will still ask you to turn in a makeup assignment before signing up next year. This also may apply if you turned in a placeholder or your gift otherwise didn't fulfill our rules.

If you have any questions about how this amnesty applies to you, please email me!

Strawberry Lemonade Pie (BPAL) - free imp w/ purchase. no site description.

On application sweetness and citrus. Sweettart candy vibes. There's a something else in there with food vibes, but I can't identify it.

After a few minutes the candy smell is gone and the food thing is stronger, but I still can't identify it. Maybe it's like pie crust? But if pie crust was derogatory. It's not a good smell.

Few minutes later: if I sit really still I get the nice candy smell. If I move at all it's bad wanna be pie crust. I think the pie crust is burnt. I think that's why it's bad.

Like a half hour / 45 minutes later - migraine says no more scent enrichment for me today. Burnt crust with no candy left.

I've been applying my scent to a small bit of cotton ball in a scent locket on a bracelet. There is little to no "warming" of the scent, but I don't have skin reactions and have to deal with hives. The trade off is worth it to me.

Challenge #15: How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

Pretty good! I’ve been doing Snowflake for about 10 years now, and it’s always a good time, one of the fannish staples I look forward to every year. As always, I enjoyed answering the challenges and the “ritual” of the month of fandom chat/squee. But I did feel less of a sense of community this year (which makes sense, given what else has been going on in the world in January 2026…), which is a little sad, since that’s also an important part of Snowflake for me.

Actually, let me talk about that latter part here, because here’s where it seems to fit best into the flow of this post. Snowflake Challenge 2026 sense of community musings )

I answered all the challenges, like I usually do, and enjoyed the mix of old favorites and new prompts.

Favorite challenges )

Old challenges I was looking forward to seeing again which were not repeated: I missed the Snowflake staples of “create a fanwork”, “try something new”, and “set some goals for yourself”. This is fine, though, because I can just do those anyway, as a challenge to myself – they do not require any creativity to SET as a challenge, and while I enjoy browsing people’s answers for them, the main reason I like them is the action I take in response, so I don’t really require a community for them. I’ve also missed the “rec something” / “rec yourself” type challenges – which I can still do on my own, since they don’t require creativity to set either – but a large part of those is definitely browsing other people’s answers. (I also miss the scavenger hunt, but that one’s not the same sort of staple as the others are, I think. And definitely not something I’m going to do on my own.)

So I’m just going to set myself those challenges anyway. The unasked challenges:

Make a fanwork:

I guess the moodboard and the primer are both fanworks, and I also made a fanwork for [community profile] fandomtrees during this month, so that one is technically fulfilled, but also I use Snowflake as my push to make some icons for new fandoms and/or new images I’ve come across during the previous year. I still plan to do this, but I will wait a little bit because there’s an installment of Taskmaster cartoons coming that I want to potentially include in that icon batch.

Try something new:

I did this naturally, by watching the first 5 episodes of The Goes Wrong Show that [personal profile] rionaleonhart has been writing delightful fic for and posted a primer for. I will post about it in full once I’m done with both series, but it has been a very fun thing to watch and, as I’d hoped and as Riona mentioned, does have a similar vibe to Taskmaster – not that it’s a similar format or anything, but, like, the low-stakes absurdist disaster feeling is similar – which is obviously great!

Rec some fanworks:

I have also done this a little bit in the course of completing the other challenges, like reccing the Taskmaster cartoons when I was talking about r/Taskmaster for community promo and reccing a brand new Elis/John longfic in the E&J fandom primer post. But here are things that did not come up naturally that I was hoping to have a chance to rec: Vorkosigan Saga, Murderbot, original art )

And, you know what, I am going to do some self-recs, too: chemistry anthropomorfic, Machineries of Empire poem, Monday Begins on Saturday )

Set some goals for yourself:

Challenge #14: In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom

I have had such great fun (and good luck!) with fandom primers in past Snowflakes, in the sense that I both really enjoyed writing them up, find them very useful to refer to down the road if I need to explain what obscure/hard-to-understand-from-osmosis thing I’m talking about, AND I think I have had at least one flister either directly take the plunge because of the primer each time or have it be a helping-along nudge towards that, which is really the best possible outcome. (Past primers: Dragaera, Terra Ignota, my 50-year-old Russian book love Monday Begins on Saturday, and Taskmaster, and I finally created a tag for them).

Last year the thought of doing one for Elis & John did occur to me, but I had only consumed one third of the “content” by then, and didn’t feel like I was ready to write any sort of primer. This year, I’m still not done catching up: I have listened to almost 9 years of radio out of 12 years, but that does mean I have about 25% to go. But, I do feel like 9 years of content is a lot of content, and I have now listened to at least some of all of the phases of their “digital decade”, and got to experience a live show, and E&J fandom on four different platforms, which hadn’t been the case last year, so I was thinking it was time. And then a 30k Elis & John fic popped up on AO3 the very day this Snowflake prompt went up, roughly doubling the total amount of E&J content on AO3, and if ever there was a sign from the universe, right? :P

So here you go. This is what I’ve been obsessed with for the last 20 months, to the extent of flying to England to attend a show.

What is it? Elis James and John Robins is a British radio show/podcast that has been on air almost-continuously in some form since February 2014. It started out on XFM/Radio X (“digital indie music radio”, as the boys rattle it off) as a live weekly radio show, moved to the BBC in 2019, as a live weekly radio show on 5Live, and in February 2024 changed to a “podcast-first” format, the exact mechanics of which are too complicated to explain (the show has adopted a sarcastic “it couldn’t be simpler!” tagline when attempting to explain it), but essentially it moved to two podcasts a week, with new episodes currently dropping Tuesdays and Fridays, and then the highlights of those go out on the radio once a week. The key thing is that across these last 12 years, with the exception of a couple of months when they were moving stations or formats, there’s been a steady output of 1-2 hours of new content a week, with occasional bonus special episodes, and all of that is available in podcast form. As of this writing, the BBC version of the show is up to 509 episodes, and there are 264 episodes on Radio X, plus a bunch of bonus ones that are unnumbered across both versions.

Elis and John have also written a book together, The Holy Vible, have done a bunch of livestreams over the years (not available officially anywhere, but there are curated sources), and have done live gigs and tours, most recently in the fall of 2025 (also not available anywhere, but there are clips, photos, etc.). You know, in case the 1000+ hours of radio/podcast content was not enough ‘canon’.

The premise: the key players and the chemistry )
the format )

OK, I think that gives a sense of the format sufficiently.

How to listen: The current BBC shows are on Spotify (and BBC Sounds, and Podbean, and all the other places). There is also bonus BBC Sounds-only content that is only officially available within the UK (but there are sources; inquire within). The Radio X/XFM shows are also available on Spotify, separately.

You can see visuals and video versions of short clips on the Instagram “carra” at bbc5live (probably easiest to search by the #elisandjohn tag.

And longer clips are on YouTube in this playlist.

Where to start: This is a great question! Opinions vary.

Two options that I think might work )
